Agile and PMI

  • Contrasting worlds - Agile and Planning
  • The agile mindset rejects the need for extensive planning.
Iterativeness is the key, and the core belief is that the further you are into a project, the more knowledge you have, and the better decisions you can make.
The project management mindset desires order and predictability. At the onset of a project, the sponsor, customer, or manager, wishes to know 'what will I get? when will I get it? how much will it cost me?', three questions that Agile/Scrum chooses to unask.
This creates a tension between both approaches. The most successful implementors are able to understand this tension, and craft approaches which gives both sides a system they function well in.
